Civility and Equity at the University of Chicago
At the University of Chicago, freedom of expression is vital to our shared goal of the pursuit of knowledge, as is the right of all members of the community to explore new ideas and the opportunity to learn from one another. In an environment of spirited and open debate, we all have the opportunity to contribute to intellectual exchanges and participate fully in the life of the University.
Each of us must seek the appropriate balance between protecting academic freedom in our "marketplace of ideas" and protecting the right of members of the community to participate freely and fully in the life of the University.
It is the responsibility of every member of the University community to foster an environment of full acceptance, respect, openness and understanding so that we can explore and discuss different views even those which are unwelcome or offensive.
